Can AI write RAMS for construction and scaffolding?

AI can help put checked notes into a RAMS draft. It should not decide how to make a site safe. Skilled people should assess the risks and plan the work. Keep final checks with them too. Start with an old, made-up job to test the writing step.

RAMS means risk assessments and method statements. The prompt on this page helps you plan a document trial. It asks about the work and the checks, rather than writing safety steps from guesses.

Use agreed notes. Leave gaps clear. Keep the site review.

  1. Set a clear limit for the draft

Ask whoever writes your RAMS where they lose time. Is it finding the current template, sorting notes or copying agreed details? Pick one part that has a source the checker can see.

HSE describes a method statement as setting out how work will be done safely. Its guidance links that plan to the risk assessment. Let the people responsible make those decisions. Ask AI to arrange their checked text, with blanks where facts is missing.

  2. Keep site decisions with the right people

Do not let a writing tool add loads, fixings, layouts or rescue plans from a short prompt. Give it only the details checked for the test. Ask it to flag missing points for the checker.

    More on this step

HSE’s risk guidance sets out the steps for managing risks at work. Use the guidance and the people suited to the task. A tidy draft cannot show that the real site was assessed. Agree who must check the document and who can approve it for use.

  3. Compare the draft with checked notes

Use a past job with invented names and site details. Keep an checked version as the answer sheet. Ask the checker to compare the meaning of each step with that version.

Record added controls, changed terms and missed gaps. A shorter draft is of little use if it changes the planned work. Keep the trial inside the office until the checker has decided what it shows. Count the time spent checking and fixing it as part of the test.

Plan a RAMS writing trial

Open this prompt to explore the paperwork. Use a fictional job. Keep actual site decisions and instructions for the people responsible for the work.

Try this in your AI app

Using Gemini? The button copies the prompt. Paste it into the new chat.

Help me plan a small trial for arranging checked RAMS notes into a draft.

Interview me about our current paperwork. Ask one question and wait for my answer. Find out who assesses the job, who plans the work and who writes, checks and approves the document.

Ask where staff repeat text. Where do they lose time looking up checked details? Help me choose a task that uses facts already agreed by the right people.

Do not design a scaffold, choose loads or fixings, suggest rescue steps or invent safety controls. Mark those matters for the skilled checker. Do not treat this chat as a site assessment.

Ask how we could test on an old job. Use made-up details and a checked answer sheet. Suggest checks for changed meanings, missing notes and extra claims.

Then summarise the trial in a table: input, drafting step, checker, known limits and reasons to stop. Include how we will withdraw wrong drafts and brief staff on the checked version.

Worked example

Check the plan for work beside a loading area

A scaffolding firm tests a document for work beside a busy loading area. The sample notes do not say how the public will be kept apart from the work. The draft must show that gap to the site team. It must not invent a barrier plan.

The construction firm that runs the site checks the draft against the agreed notes. The people who plan the work resolve the missing point. The checker then reviews the full document and its version. This trial tests how notes become a draft. Skilled people still assess the job, agree the method and approve it.

Made-up example.

How this example works
  1. Approved notes

    Use the method already agreed.

  2. Document draft

    Flag gaps without inventing controls.

  3. Competent review

Check meaning and approve the version.

A few more things to know

Make the right version easy to find

Name and date the draft. Keep it apart from the checked site copy. Decide who will remove an old version when the plan changes.

Before use, ask the team to confirm that they have the current checked document. Follow your normal briefing process for the work. If conditions change, send the issue back to the people responsible. Changing the text alone does not show that the changed work has been planned or checked.

Test the parts most likely to go wrong

Try a sample with a missing step. Add a changed location and two notes that conflict. Write down what the checker expects the draft to do. Keep those answers away from the tool during the trial.

Check whether the draft leaves questions open or hides them in smooth prose. Stop if it makes missing facts sound settled. Ask the checker whether a narrower task would help. Keep a record of the fault so the next test can check that exact point again.

Can a RAMS generator replace the site review?

Use people with the skills and knowledge needed for the job. Treat a generated file as a draft to check. It does not show that a risk was assessed or a method agreed.

Where should a small firm begin?

Walk through its paperwork with the person who checks it. Choose a repeat writing step based on checked notes. Test with invented details before considering any use on live work.
