AI for IT managed service providers

MSPs can use AI in two ways: inside their own service desk, and as new services for clients. Internally, AI triages tickets, drafts replies, writes documentation and builds quarterly business review packs. For clients, MSPs can sell Copilot readiness, AI policies, shadow AI audits and training.

Start with ticket triage and QBR packs, then package an AI readiness service for the clients already asking about Copilot.

Where AI pays back first

  1. More revenue

Sell AI readiness, policy and training as new services to existing clients.

  2. Lower costs

    Handle more tickets per engineer.

  3. Time back

Cut hours on documentation and QBR preparation.

MSPs use PSA and RMM tools such as ConnectWise, Autotask, HaloPSA and NinjaOne, many with AI. Microsoft Copilot is a common client request.

Different firms, different starting points

  • Managed service providers

Service desk and projects. AI helps triage and docs.

  • IT consultancies

Projects and advice. AI helps proposals and readiness reviews.

Worked example

An MSP that adds an AI readiness service

An MSP with 80 small business clients gets weekly questions about Microsoft Copilot and whether staff can use ChatGPT.

It builds a fixed-price readiness review: a permissions and oversharing check, a shadow AI survey, a short policy and a training session. AI drafts the report from the tenant checks and survey results.

Engineers confirm every finding. The MSP tracks reviews sold and Copilot projects that follow.

Try a practical task

Find your first job to fix

Paste this into a business AI account. Fill in the brackets. It asks you questions first, then suggests one job to test.

Try this in your AI app

Using Gemini? The button copies the prompt. Paste it into the new chat.

You are helping a UK MSP find its first AI use. Ask me one question at a time.

Ask about our clients, PSA and RMM tools, ticket volume and AI requests from clients.

Include one idea for our own service desk and one we could sell to clients, such as a Copilot readiness review. For each, say what an engineer must verify.

Suggest three ideas ranked by revenue first, then cost, then time, and say what a person must still check for each.

Finish with a short test plan for the best idea and how we will measure it.

Rules that shape the work

Shadow AI

Clients' staff already use free AI tools. Offer a shadow AI audit as a service.

Keeping data safe

Use business or enterprise AI accounts with model training turned off and a data processing agreement signed. Client credentials and configs must never go into prompts.

What each leader should do first

  • Managing director

Package AI readiness as a service. Clients already ask for it.

  • Service desk manager

Test ticket triage with engineers checking every fix.

Questions owners ask

How can MSPs use AI?

Inside the service desk for triage, replies and documentation, and as new client services such as readiness reviews, AI policies and training.

What is a Copilot readiness assessment?

A check of Microsoft 365 permissions, sensitive data and policies before rolling out Copilot, so it does not surface files people should not see.

Will AI replace IT support?

AI handles simple tickets and documentation. Complex faults, security and advice still need engineers.

Is Copilot safe for client data?

Copilot follows Microsoft 365 permissions, so fix oversharing first. Read Microsoft's data and privacy documentation with the client.
